Attics can be those creepy, cobwebby places that you see in scary movies – or bright, open areas with high ceilings and lots of window light. Whatever yours is, make sure that you utilize any storage space to it’s max.
If your attic is finished (floors, walls, closets) and you don’t want to use it as an additional living space, you can use your attic for more storage space. Put inexpensive plastic storage shelving to hold seasonal decorations, collections, etc. The closets can be made into cedar closets very easily. Cedar is used to repel insects that eat clothing – mostly wool – while they hang in your closet! If the attic is not finished, you can lay sheets of plywood across attic joists to hold boxes, but don’t overload it.
Attics tend to be drier than basements so it’s an ideal space to store paper items (books, maps, vintage dolls, clothing, etc.). Make sure there are no roof leaks into the attic space and that the attic is properly ventilated so that your stored treasures don’t get damaged or deteriorate quickly.
Add lighting if it’s inadequate. Several stores offer good battery operated lights that mount with screws/nails or double sided tape. Get ones with very bright light so that you can read labels, etc.
Make sure you have a sturdy attic ladder with handrails so that you can safely move things in and out of the attic. Install one if you don’t. You can find many different models starting at $70 up to $900.
Take Away: Reclaim that unused space above us and put it to good use. Purchase or make suitable storage solutions that keep your items organized and free from dust and dirt. Occasionally sweep, dust and vacuum your attic so that you don't create an allergen environment for yourself.
