May 22: They're SPECIAL.....!

We all have those special storage challenges within individual spaces that we struggle to deal with. These are things that we use on a daily or weekly basis, but are not necessarily "collections". Things like:

• Art/crafting supplies

• Tools

• Recipes

• Make-up / Toiletries

• Jewelry

• Ties/Scarves/Belts/Hats

Sometimes these types of items get dumped in a container, mixed in with lots of other stuff, and whenever we need it, we have to wade thru the waters. Storing these types of items has been going on for as long as these items have been in existence!

Many of these items have been recreated for modern living (with a modern price tag!) but their use remains the same - a way to store items neatly and efficiently. So now you have a choice: you can purchase storage solutions, or make them (from scratch or by reusing what you already own). Most of us with have a combination of both.

If you google "jewelry box", "tie hanger" or "tool box" you will see all different kinds that are available on the market. You may elect to purchase one, or get ideas on how to create a custom storage solution. Two examples in my world: my mom had a vast jewelry collection. None of the jewelry boxes on the market were large enough, nor had the right kind of compartments needed to store all of her jewelry. We purchased a large mechanics toolbox on wheels that held all of her jewelry in one place - organized by drawer - all under lock and key. I inherited my grandparents record player cabinet. I painted it a burnished orange, took out the shelves, and use it for a bar. It holds all of my bar accessories (wine bottle stoppers, bottle openers, coasters, etc.) and looks great in the living room.

Search thrift stores, flea markets, yard sales, etc. for those one-of-a-kind items that can be used in creative ways. Baskets and decorative boxes are always a great go-to as well. You can also buy empty paint cans, Chinese food containers, etc. to storage items.

Take Away: Start looking around you for things that you can use to improve your storage. Get those creative juices flowing and send me some pics of what you've created for your storage challenges...SPECIALLY made by you!

Tomorrow let's talk turkey!
