May 23: Happy Birthday to You!

Updated: May 25, 2020

One of those rarely talked about items, but frequently used, is gift wrap, occasion cards and decorations. You all know what I'm talking about - we all have gift wrap, boxes, gift tags, tissue paper, gift and holiday cards and decorations for those special events in our lives. Do you remember what you have? Can you find it easily? Don't answer! Just think about it...!

Some of us have these items organized in one place and easy to get to, while others of us have things in different locations like: under the bed, in the closet, car trunk or dresser drawer. A centrally located "gift box" can help gather of these things together and make it easy to get to and use.

In my gift box, I have boxes, tissue paper, ribbon, bows, gift tags and bags and gifts to re-gift. I also buy or find "special" containers to put gifts in (like new Chinese food containers, candy cans, wicker or wood containers) and the container becomes a part of the gift. These are put into my gift box too because I will need them one day!

Even, when I buy gift cards, I try to present it in a creative way. Gift box, container, gift bag...... anything to make the gift memorable. My mom use to buy gift wrap things (wrapping paper, bags, ribbons, elastic bands, cards, etc.) when they go on sale, or at outlet stores. If you only buy it when you need it, you'll usually spend full retail price, which can add $10-20 to the price of the gift! Get creative - use that creativity to present pretty presents!

Decorations are another area that can use organization. I love decorations and add onto my stash often. I recently took everything out of all of my storage boxes and reorganized them by occasion, and as I outgrow one box I add another to the group. The boxes are all labeled so that I don't need to open them to see what's inside. If you need to help decorate at another location, like a family member's house, the decorations are already boxed and ready to go. Dressing a table - center pieces and individual place settings - adds a festive feeling to your holiday and reinforces your theme. Don't forget the lights - wax or battery operated candles and string lights - they make everything beautiful. Oh....stock up on batteries.... while they're on sale!

Take Away: Make your gift giving fun and creative.... use those treasures in your gift box! You'll enjoy giving it as much as they enjoy getting it. As you get organized, don't forget, they do have special boxes to store those rolls of wrapping paper, Christmas decorations, wreaths, etc. Get them if you need them! After covid19 is past us and you begin to entertain again, pick a theme and have fun decorating your home in a way that makes your guests feel welcome. We humans like to party!
