May 25: Start Me Up!

I am a lover of coffee! There..... I said it! I started drinking coffee when my youngest child decided he would not sleep all night until the age of 2 years old. Of course, I had already gone back to work so trying to work 8 hours, then take care of family and home on a couple hours of sleep per night led to drastic measures..... coffee!

He is way older than 2 years old now, but I still enjoy a strong cup of coffee every morning to get me going. My mom, knowing how much I love coffee, gave me a t-shirt years ago with a coffee cup on it and the words "start me up"! It embodies my coffee experience.

Not being a drinker of instant coffee (we coffee snobs would never lower ourselves to that!), I've used coffee makers, percolators, french presses and (my most recent) Keurig. With each and every one of these, crud accumulates! Coffee grinds get into cracks and crevices, water leaves mineral lines and everything you ever sit on your counter somehow ends up under it.

I've cleaned many a coffee pot but became challenged when I started using Keurig. My youngest son - the one that wouldn't sleep all night - gave me my first Keurig. I loved it! You see, I must have hot coffee. Not lukewarm, not room temperature, but hot. Because of this, I reheat my coffee in the microwave over and over again - I'm a sipper - to keep it hot. I recently moved into a house that did not have a built-in microwave and I've put off buying one (to see if I can live without one) so I now heat it up in a pan on the stove! Anyway, with Keurig, I can make one cup at a time - the freshest of fresh! For those of you that don't know, freshly brewed coffee cannot sit on a warmer for more than 20 minutes without it being ruined - it "burns".

Keurig comes with it's own water filter (which you must remember to change regularly) and you ust also "descale" it every so often (which you must also remember)! What? Descale? Of course I don't know where my Keurig owners manual is so I looked online to find out how to properly clean a Keurig. I came across the Good House Keeping Institute Cleaning Lab for very thorough - but easy to understand - cleaning instructions. Read here. I actually liked their instructions better than the ones on the Keurig site.

Take Away: Whatever coffee maker you use, the cleaner you keep it, the better your coffee will taste. Don't forget the coffee grinder. My oldest child has gotten me hooked on freshly ground coffee when she bought me a coffee grinder and french coffee press. Keeping that coffee grinder clean......oh my! Enjoy that fresh "hot" cup of coffee!
