May 28: Comfy, Cozy!

We all like to grab a blanket and snuggle on the sofa to look at a good movie. Is your furniture clean and smell fresh? Or do you have pets that leave pet odors and fur on your furniture? Are crumbs and spills a constant companion to your furniture? Learn how to have beautiful belongings while still "living" in your living room!

Sometimes furniture comes with stain repellent already applied to it. If yours didn't, you can purchase and apply your own very easily. It helps keep liquid from soaking into the fabric and gives you time to grab a towel to soak it up. It also keeps liquids or foods from leaving a stain. Use a clean, white cloth and scrub with clean water to remove most stains. Soap or a furniture cleaner created for your type of furniture can also be used.

Make your furniture child-friendly. Let your children use furniture created for children to eat at, or cover your upholstered dining room chairs with a towel so that they're comfortable and you're not worried about spills. If the family plans to eat popcorn on the couch while watching a movie, a sheet placed on the couch before your young ones get comfortable is much easier to throw in the washing machine than trying to get butter off of the sofa.

Furniture should be vacuumed at least once per month. I rarely do this so I'm always appalled when I finally do and see how much has fallen between the cushions! Remove the cushions and vacuum all the crevices.....you'll be amazed what you find down there! Toys, food, money, hair pins and lost socks - all between your cushions.

Fabrics can also pick up all kinds of smells - from pets, to sweaty bodies or feet. A fabric refresher like Febreeze can be used weekly to keep your furniture smelling fresh. If you allow your pets on the furniture, considering using a furniture pad on their favorite chair. It keeps fur and odors off of your furniture and can be easily washed.

Take Away: Take care of your furniture to keep it comfy, cozy and inviting! Do these few simple things recommended by the DIY Network to keep your furniture clean. Buy new pillows to freshen the look of your furniture. Make sure they're washable. Now.... pass the popcorn and start the movie!
